A lacrosse (LAX) training program must carefully balance the rigours of one of the most strenuous team sports. LAX requires the physical and performance qualities of most other sports combined.
Research shows that players must possess size, strength, power, speed, agility and endurance. LAX players require a high body-weight to cope with the aggressive physical contact in the game. However, a higher than average body-weight must be coupled with a low body fat percentage as players are required to maneuver quickly around the field of play.
From a sport performance point of view, we know that LAX players will benefit from a phase of hypertrophy training to increase lean muscle mass. That said, size is not the only objective. Maximal strength, explosive power and power endurance are also important outcomes of a LAX training program.
Speed and agility training is another vital element of a LAX training program – for all positions. This highlights one of the challenges of designing a premiere lacrosse training plan: combining all the required elements of fitness without one negatively affecting the other.
